Hi all. Got something weird when working on Steg4....

Found the part where the password should be, selected that, cropped it and saved it (using paint). Using hexedit to have a look at it. Can't make anything of it, but that's just me Smile
The weird thing is that, after making several crops it seems that the hex code is different every time....
I'm using the same source picture which I downloaded and (double)checked that I make the exact same selection before I crop it and save it to a file. Still the hex is different (?)

Any ideas what this could be?

I have the same trouble, Ive tried the same process with several image editing apps.

There is no need to crop or alter the image in any way in order to complete the challenge. If you crop the image you could be changing values that you need.

Mkay, other threads talked about cropping out the part you need. But it seems that, like you said, values are changing when doing that.

So I (we) should be able to get the answer using the complete image? I've seen where the answer probably is in the image, but how do I find that 'location' using hex editor....

There are several different methods people have used to completed this challenge that's why you have some variation in some answers. To clarify on my earlier response you can crop the image as long as the program you our using is not changing the values of the area being cropped.
The simplest way most users have completed this challenge only involves using some form of image editing software such as Photoshop and a chart such this one.

Also as with most challenges on this site it seems the principle of Occam's razor in full effect and we often get caught up in over complicating things making ourselves our own worst enemy.

So it seems like the software I'm using is making some changes (paint, irfanview).
And also my razor appears to be getting blunt Wink

    Let's give this another try....

have you guys tried chaning the extension format(gif,png...)?
    maybe the helps
Fools ignore complexity. Pragmatists suffer it. Some can avoid it. Geniuses remove it.

    Ok, got it Grin

Even no need for an ASCII table...
