yes, surely save the hash to text file and then cain can import it to crack.

You can also try OPHcrack, i find this tool rally useful with compact rainbow tables available.

You can also use john the ripper.... or may be an online cracker.

hope this helps .......... Smile

Yet again it would be great if someone could show a way for this to work on OSX. I have installed JTR but got repeated errors as have many other mac users. I tried OPHCrack but had to install 3rd party software to make the GUI work this didn't work. I have tried to use Cain and Abel on a windows 7 machine in VMWare but again this failed I even saved the document as it should be. username:hash.

Would love some help on this one I just can't find a good tool Sad Starting to dislike OSX more and more these days.

For OSX you have 2 options.

Download the jumbo patch version
http://www.openwall.com/john/contrib/john-1.7.5-jumbo-1-macosx-universal-1.ziprsal-1.zip
or

Install mac ports from http://www.macports.org/install.php

Update macports
$ sudo port -v selfupdate
$ sudo port install john

Let us know how you go.

or just download the latest version from JTR, I have downloaded the latest version and it works just like on linux with no errors (at least on 10.6.4 with a modified mach kernel)

Damn, ran john against this hash for 8 hours last night..Should there be a special charset? Someone said numbers only, then someone said thats not true..Is it only a-zA-Z0_9? Would a wordlist do better then bruting? Thanks in advance

I have been trying to decrypt this LM has for like two week now and i cant seem to get it. I have cain and able and i dont know how to get it to load the has from a .txt file it just loads blank. I tried downloading Ophcrack and the rainbow tables didnt work when i finally got it to install correctly. I can seem to find an online decrypter for LM hash. This challenge is driving me nuts. Any advice would be much appreciated.

In Cain and Abel if you go the the crack section and select "LM & NTLM hashes" you can then right click on the area to the right and there should be an option "Add to List" which will let you add the hash you want to crack.

I ran JTR on it and it found pass in a few minutes.

All i did was put in txt file; with user:hash and then said john filelocation, and it solved it for me

no options or anything were necessary to solve it. John the Ripper ripped right through it

I am still having problems with this hash, even when I move the hash into a text file and adding 'user:' in front, any suggestions?

John the ripper will definately work for this hash, just ran it tonight, save a text file with user:'hash', then run it.

I tried the lm hash
Download source  Code
6E0A88EE332CC78DAAD3B435B51404EE

tried a bunch of online sites like
Download source  Code
http://cracker.offensive-security.com/index.php

and it says it is a bad hash. Any suggestions? How long does this challenge and the MD5 normally take an average user?

OPH crack is best for this Challenge as it did the thing for me in just 1min.
So I would prefer that you can use that tool.
But in some special case, if the password contains any Special characters then you have to Download the rainbow tables.

Hmm now out of curiosity I'm gunna try re-cracking this one and explicitly timing it. It should NOT take you 2 weeks even with special characters thanks to the notoriously weak nature of such hashes.

edit:
Download source  Code

[madf0x@Enki ~]$ mpiexec -np 8 ****** ******
Loaded 1 password hash (LM DES [128/128 BS SSE2])
MPI: each node processing 1/8 of 1013 rules. (uneven split)
MPI: each node loaded 1/8 of wordfile to memory (about 2 KB/node)
************          (lm)
Node 6: All hashes cracked at 0:00:00:09! Aborting other nodes.
application called MPI_Abort(MPI_COMM_WORLD, 0) - process 6

Ctrl-C caught... cleaning up processes

9 seconds using a wordlist. Lets try incremental shall we?

Download source  Code

[madf0x@Enki ~]$ mpiexec -np 8 ****** ***** ******
